Side Effects of Propecia [Finasteride]
We have discussed how Propecia [Finasteride] can be a treatment option for hair loss. But it is a form of medication and has possible side effects. In this post we will discuss the more commonly reported side effects of Propecia. This is not to put you off using Propecia for your hair loss management but to better inform you in deciding what hair loss product to invest in.
Before we go into the side effects, it’s important to know that not everyone taking the drug will have side effects
Erectile Dysfunction. Probably the most distressing side effect of Propecia and been reported as occurring in 1 – 2% of people taking Propecia. Erectile dysfunction refers to an inability to achieve a full erection or inability to maintain an erection long enough to complete sexual intercourse. Loss of sexual libido has also been reported in about 1.8% of patients.
Abnormal Ejaculation. Loss of volume of ejaculate has been reported in about 1% of people on Propecia
Gynaecomastia or enlarged breasts. This occurs in less than 1% of people taking Finasteride and may be associated with breast tenderness.
The occurrence of the above side effects is not surprising because of the mechanism of action of Finasteride
Allergic reactions. These could range from an itchy rash to difficulty in breathing. If you suspect you are allergic to Propecia, stop taking the drug and consult your doctor.
As you can see side effects occur in a small proportion of users of Propecia and in most the side effects are reversed on stopping the use of the drug. However in a small proportion of people, these side effects have been reported as lasting beyond stopping the drug
Propecia is not licensed for use in females with hair loss and should be avoided by women of child bearing age
