Propecia And Female Hair Loss
Propecia is not licenced for use in women with hair loss and is contraindicated in pregnant women.
Here is what the producers of Propecia say
‘Women who are or may potentially be pregnant must not use PROPECIA and should not handle crushed or broken PROPECIA tablets because the active ingredient may cause abnormalities of a male baby’s sex organs. If a
woman who is pregnant comes into contact with the active ingredient in PROPECIA, a doctor should be consulted. PROPECIA tablets are coated and will prevent contact with the active ingredient during normal handling, provided that the tablets are not broken or crushed. ‘
It is not surprising really that exposure of an unborn fetus to Propecia carries the risk of that fetus having sexual developmental disorders.
Propecia or finasteride is a dihydrotestosterone inhibitor. That’s how it helps reduce hair loss.
The male fetus needs dihydrotestosterone for the development of male sexual characteristics.
If a pregnant woman absorbs finasteride either through handling crushed tablets or by using it for hair loss, you can easily see how the resultant suppression of DHT could cause a variety of disorders in the fetus.
Studies in pregnant rats resulted in abnormalities in the fetuses ranging from hypospadias, which is when the urethra opens UNDER the penis rather than at the tip of the penis to decreased size of prostate and seminal vesicles.
If you are pregnant and think you have touch finasteride tablets, don’t panic. Wash your hands as soon as possible and consult your doctor. Propecia usually comes in coated form so short lived handling of uncrushed tablets does not carry the same risk as handling crushed tablets. Having said that you must consult your doctor.
Ironically, although Propecia is not licensed for use in women, an Italian study reported in 2006 showed that Finasteride could help reduce hair loss in some women with alopecia. However because of the risks especially in women of child bearing age, Propecia is
solely indicated in MEN with hair loss.
