Finasteride And Male Hair Loss

Propecia and proscarFinasteride is a dihyrotestoterone inhibitor that works by stopping the conversion of testoterone to dihydrotestoterone by 5-alpha reductase. Finasteride was initially licensed for use in benign prostatic hypertrophy but is known to help male hair loss.

Finasteride in 5 mg tablets for the treatment of prostate hypertrophy is marketed as Proscar whereas Finasteride is marketed for hair loss treatment in 1 mg tablets under the trade name Propecia.

Propecia is taken by mouth and has to be taken for up to a year before your physician can comment on it’s success in treating hair loss. Also during the first few months of using Finasteride you may initially notice a thinning of hair before hair growth becomes apparent.

About 10 percent of men will not respond to Propecia i.e. Propecia will not help reduce hair loss in 10% of men.

Approximately 50% of men will notice hair growth with Finasteride and a further 40% will notice a reduction in the hair loss but no new growth.

Propecia is more likely to work in young men and if started within two years of the onset of male hair loss.

Propecia should not be taken by women with male pattern hair loss and should not be handled or crushed by pregnant women.

Apart from potential side effects, Propecia will only work for as long as you continue to take it. So hair loss will resume soon after you stop taking your Propecia regularly.

Propecia has had FDA approval for use in male pattern hair loss since 1997.

As with all pills, please consult your Doctor before taking Finasteride tablets for hair loss or prostatic hypertrophy
